Carmakers in Detroit and beyond deserve high praise for making remarkable progress against a persistent challenge in the automobile age: how to squeeze more power from less fuel.

Today’s array of smart, fast, safe and fuel-efficient cars of various sizes save consumers money at the pump, reduce our dependence on the volatile global oil market, cut tailpipe pollution, and raise the bar on technology innovation and competitive success across the industry.
