It turns out that fun-to-drive cars, 500-horsepower engines and respectable fuel economy don’t have to be mutually exclusive…

The vehicles that automakers brought to the Detroit auto show focused more on advanced iterations of existing and familiar technology —more usage of direct injection, automatic transmissions with up to 9-speed gearboxes, the use of lightweight materials — to reduce fuel usage, versus completely new and untested automotive systems.
