Average fuel economy of new vehicles sold in 2012 hits 24 mpg

DETROIT, MI- The average fuel economy of new vehicles sold in the U.S. last year increased to nearly 24 miles per gallon, officials announced today.

The average fuel economy of the 14.5 million vehicles sold in 2012 was 23.8 mpg, up 1.3 mpg from 2011 and up 2.9 mpg from 2008, according to the Transportation Research Institute at The University of Michigan.
